what is something that you admire about how things worked at The Alice in 2015, its 1st year?
Julia and I co-curated most of the shows in 2015. I have loved the way we could ping off each other in a very organic way and there could not be a nicer person to go on this journey with. And of course she introduced me to the work of artists I did not know and am better for knowing. I especially loved I Come To You In Pieces with Rachel McGinnes, Maria Walker, and Guy Merrill. There was an equal contribution and reveal in that show so I take a lot of heart away from it. Also the show rocked.
What are you interested in bringing to the conversation that hasn’t already been established at the Alice?
I am mostly interested in what a powerful art object is and can do. I think it is generally separate from language - that is its terrain. I am interested in the context of that object both in the context it creates - its ecosystem - and in the context one can place it in.
I would also like to expand events at The Alice to include more readings and performances that relate to the shows in an open ended way.
What do you make yourself?
I am a painter working with reclaimed textiles. I make collage and painted fabric constructions that bring the associations of textiles into the realm of a painting’s associations. I am making decisions at the periphery of awareness and looking for the fruiting bodies - as well as the deflated ones.
What keeps you up at night?
Chemical imbalances. I take long hot showers where I create installations in my mind.
What is something particular you look forward to learning more about or thinking more about when you are working with each of the 3 other people?
2016 will be very different from 2015 - more political and more directly about context. I am very interested in seeing how this all plays out in the gallery and how it might help me develop my studio work.
