Artist Bios and Community Engagement Dates:
Kerry Downey is a Florida-born, Brooklyn-based, multi-disciplinary artist who makes videos, works on paper, and performances. Their work illuminates the connections between private emotion and political consciousness. Queer bodies, landscapes, and objects are presented as intimate, sensorial worlds, always in flux.

The Gutta' Collective is a Phoenix poetry group committed to sharing a Black and Brown narrative through art and poetry in hopes to give a voice to the silent, isolated, and marginalized. The Gutta Collective consists of Marco A. Piña, Joel Salcido & Rashaad Thomas.

Joel Salcido was born a San Fernando Valley cockroach and smuggled to the Westside of Phoenix, where he translates the poetry of the barrio pigeons into the brujería of magical realism. He is blessed with a beautiful wife and three sons as well as a cadre of talented brothers, friends, and fellow hood radicals. He is managing editor of Hayden’s Ferry Review and an MFA candidate in poetry at Arizona State University.
Rashaad Thomas is a husband, father, USAF Veteran, poet,VONA/Voices of Our Nation Art Foundation Alum, and MacDowell Colony Fellow Winter ‘17. He lives in South Phoenix, AZ. His work can be found in a number of publications, most notably in the book Trayvon Martin, Race, and American Justice: Writing Wrong, Columbia Poetry Review, The Rumpus, Heart Journal Online, and others. He also is a contributor to My Click Urban (http://myclickurban.com). He is a member of the Gutta' Collective based in the Phoenix, a group committed to sharing a Black and Brown narrative through art and poetry to give a voice to the silent, isolated, and marginalized.
Kenji C. Liu is a 1.5-generation immigrant from New Jersey, now in Los Angeles. His writing and visual art arises from his work as an activist, educator, and cultural worker.

Katherine Simóne Reynolds is an artist based in Saint Louis, MO who creates conceptual portraits, architectural photography, video installation, performance. Reynolds thoroughly integrates her intuitive, second-nature approach to movement and choreography into her visual art practice. Her works are at once literal, authentic, and emotional.

Vickie Vértiz is a Los Angeles–based poet writer and social justice advocate who teaches creative writing to adults and young people across the country. Her second book, Palm Frond With Its Throat Cut was just released by the University of Arizona Press.

Writer in Residence:
Abi Pollokoff is a Seattle-based writer with work previously in Transom; The Birds We Piled Loosely; CALAMITY; Guernica; and H_NGM_N, among others. A former reader for the Seattle Review and editor in chief of the Tulane Review, she won the 2012 Anselle M. Larson/Academy of American Poets Prize for Tulane University. In 2016, she received her MFA from the University of Washington. She is the events manager for Open Books: A Poem Emporium and a content director in visual communications.
