The Alice is proud to present A Story In My Pocket with Yevgeniya Baras from Brooklyn and Teresa Baker from Texas. Both artists present tactile, abstract work that contains the bones of distilled storytelling. Yevgeniya Baras’s paintings are sculpted and encrusted with layers of paint and delicate line that often wraps around and overtakes the frame. Her subjects include moons, mountains, butterflies, clouds, and water. Her work inventively harkens to a time when the mysteries of nature were/will be one’s everyday discourse. Teresa Baker lives in Beaumont, Texas. Teresa’s paintings are made up primarily of layered plastic mesh. Her work is about light and air. She gives us these generous fields of material and then a sweet mark and a thoughtful edge. She has the heart of a painter while using a more direct, less familiar material.
Yevgeniya’s and Teresa’s works are very different from each other but that difference can lead one astray. Both artists are experts in telling a story using materiality and abstraction. Both artists tell us a story that is personal and held close to the body.
