Interdisciplinary Visual Arts students from University of Washington School of Art, Art History and Design will exhibit their final works from their Media in Installation, senior studio course which pushes students to further a research-based, material focused approach to making art. Over ten weeks, students have
developed one work from inception to exhibition, with careful consideration given to plurality, difference, community-building, and togetherness. The exhibition will feature sculptural, social, and media-based work that spans the human experience- ranging from emotionality and sites of resistance to representation and empowerment. Artists:
Holly McConnell is a Seattle based artist currently completing a BA from the University of Washington. Her interest in photography and art began at a young age while taking photography and yearbook classes in junior high school. She is now developing an art practice that deals with the human body through a feminist lens.
Wanna Huang is an artist and student of University of Washington who major in Interdisciplinary Visual arts as well as a part of the animation capstone. She is interested in landscape paintings that have a sense of the monumental and evoke the feeling of the sublime. These paintings juxtapose human scale with the scale for the natural world, which makes her wonder how much space do we take and how much do we deserve in terms of our existence. She paints through the lens of observation and realization to discover interrelationship of the world through a moment of pause.
Sarah Maglaras is a Seattle based artist getting a BA from the University of Washington. Her work is centered on photography, video, and the use of color as a way to evoke certain feelings or moods in her pieces. Most recently Sarah has been using photography and video as a way to capture or symbolize memories and feelings of loss or of things left behind.
Lauren Dake is a visual artist from Seattle graduating with her BA in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts from the University of Washington. Her recent focus is on presenting her video work in the form of installation, exploring notions of body, gender, feminism, and digital worlds while also being in conversation with ideas of alienation, anxiety and feelings of detachment.
Dylan Jackson is an artist from Seattle, WA graduating with his BA in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts this spring at the University of Washington. Equipped with a natural act for 2D art he began practicing various mediums from sculpture, to performance, eventually gravitating towards film. He is focusing on animation as a career and is currently working on a short film alongside twenty other students as part of UW’s animation capstone.
Kristi Yamamoto is an artist and student studying psychology and visual art at the University of Washington. She aims to combine these two fields of study to create work for and about marginalized groups that she identifies with. Her work has transitioned from primarily photography, drawing, and painting to using video and other media to discuss intersections of race, sexuality, and self-reflection. Through these discussions, she hopes to uplift underrepresented communities.
Tia Scambray is a California born American artist. She is getting a BA in IVA (Interdisciplinary Visual Arts) at the University of Washington. She works with many mediums including print, watercolor, graphite, glass, plaster and found materials. Over the last year she has focused her work in print and found object arts. In her most recent works she focuses on the issue of Ocean Conservation through the use of recycled materials in her pieces.
Fluffy Spencer fled the gaming and tech industry in 2015 to follow their dreams of becoming an artist. In their new role, Fluffy seeks to bridge the gap between the human world and magic with their art. Where once they used their fine arts training to draw or paint these bridges, they now use sculptures made of ceramics, foam, epoxy, fabric, faux fur, and found objects. In this piece, Fluffy is pulling inspiration from their previous gaming career and their passion for fantasy and art.
Andrea Buenbrazo is a Filipino American artist based in Seattle. She is graduating with a BA in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts at the University of Washington in the spring. She is a multimedia artist, primarily working with a drawing, photography, and video. Much of her work is a journey of working through life events and emotions. Her past works have explored topics of vitiligo, self acceptance, and feminism. She is currently interested in creating works that are interchangeable within a gallery space and an online space.
Erika Morales is a Filipino Seattle-based illustrator, artist, and designer graduating with her BA in Interdisciplinary Visual Art from the University of Washington, with background studies in visual communication and architecture from The University of The Philippines, Diliman. She specializes in 2D illustration, graphic art/design, and mixed media projects that have recurringly been used for publications and publicity pieces to strongly depict ideas and messages while resonating visually and emotionally with viewers. Erika is strongly influenced by her Manila roots, as well as narratives surrounding immigration.
Sean Vergara is a visual artist located in Seattle, Washington. Working in many different media, he focuses mainly on painting, drawing, illustration, and design. His work explores the dynamic compositions and forms that can be achieved within two and three dimensional works. He aims to merge visual cues from a variety of cultural sources, to create pieces that have unique visual aesthetics.
Gabi Boettner is a multidisciplinary artist based in Seattle, WA about to receive a BA in Drama Performance and Interdisciplinary Visual Art from the University of Washington. Gabi uses her visual art practice, which includes photography, printmaking, and sculptural assemblage to investigate personal conceptions of order, chaos and nostalgia in relation to current socio-political trends. Her recent works have centered around unpacking her own whiteness in the context of institutionalized racism.
Erin Keating is a Seattle based UW student studying visual arts with a primary focus on ceramic and plaster sculpture.During her time at UW, she has experimented with different concepts, techniques, and materials and has sparked an interest in the human figure and the commonality between all humans by making work that shares a look into my own personal experience on this earth.
Lauren Sifferman is a multimedia sculpture artist and painter currently working in Seattle Washington. Her work focuses on personal themes of identity, feminism, and social commentary by utilizing a variety of medium including textiles, ceramics, metal, beeswax, and wood. The work varies greatly in terms of its presentation and is mainly unified through a love of unconventional media mixture and its overarching themes.
