After 4 years as a contemporary art space run by a curatorial collective of artists, writers, teachers, witches, designers, lovers, fighters, chefs, warriors, singers, cat and dog lovers, dancers, researchers, movers and thinkers, The Alice is closing its doors. We are grateful to everyone that trusted us, worked with us, learned with us, taught us and became our family in the process of making this thing we called The Alice. This decision was not an easy one, but will pave the way for other, smaller galleries to also usher in meaningful, and innovative practices urgently needing exposure. We are proud of the work we have done in Seattle and beyond, the artists with whom we have supported, the rich communities that we brought together, and the vision for a future of art practice.
Established in 2015, The Alice has presented new work and experimental projects by Pacific Northwest, national and international artists, highlighting work with a strong investment in material exploration. We have worked to create a space where artists, writers, thinkers and makers could create community and dialogue through contemporary art, curatorial opportunities, and alternative modes of production. Simply put, The Alice was a space that believed in the power of creative practice to transform the world into a more just and equitable place, one exhibition at a time.
Our curatorial family that made all of this possible includes Rezina Habtemariam, Julia Heineccius, Bettina Judd, Satpreet Kahlon, Minh Nguyen, Natalie A. Martínez, Molly Mac, Thea Quiray Tagle, Dan Paz, S. Surface and co-founders Julie Alexander and Julia Freeman.
A very special thanks to our neighbors and friends at The Hamilton building in Georgetown, Sharon Arnold from LxWxH and Bridge Productions (who gifted The Alice such a nice beginning), and Julia Greenway at interstitial. And thank you to the co-founding curator Julie Alexander from 2014-2016.
Please join us in a farewell toast at Ciudad on the evening of May 18th, starting at 6pm. We look forward to reminiscing and bringing the community together one last time in honor of The Alice.
Yours always,
The Alice
